AVIF is the newest of the mainstream web image formats and technically the best of them — it compresses smaller than WebP, which compresses smaller than JPEG, at equivalent quality. Sites that care about performance have started serving it, which means people increasingly save an .avif file from a page and discover that very little outside a browser will open it.

That is a support-timeline problem rather than a fault with the file. Browsers adopted AVIF quickly. Desktop software, image editors, email clients, and upload forms move much more slowly, and many still do not recognise the format at all. Converting to JPEG is the pragmatic fix — you lose the size advantage, but you get a file that works everywhere without exception.

Since AVIF is normally lossy, converting to JPEG means a second lossy pass. Keeping quality at 85 or above makes that invisible for photographs at normal viewing sizes. AVIF is particularly good at preserving smooth gradients, so if the image contains a sky, a soft background, or subtle skin tones, be a little more generous with quality than you would be for a busy photograph.

Note that AVIF supports transparency and JPEG does not, so any transparent areas will be filled with a solid colour — white by default. For logos and graphics saved from a site, converting to PNG instead is usually the better call. Decoding depends on your browser supporting AVIF, which current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari all do.
